Instructions for "Outburst Jr."

Outburst Jr. by Mattel Inc. is a simplified version of the original Outburst board game and is targeted to children aged 7 and up. Played by four or more players divided into two teams, the object of Outburst Jr. is to shout out as many answers for the given topic as you can within one minute. Each correct answer will score one point for your team.

  • Divide the players into two teams. Do not worry if there are an odd number of players.

  • Select a colored Scoring Glide for each team and attach it to the scorecard.

  • Determine which team goes first by rolling the 10-sided die that is included in the game. The team with the highest roll starts the game.

  • Roll the die to begin your turn. The number on the die indicates which response is worth three bonus points (the "zero" on the die represents "10").

  • Slide a card into the card viewer, if you are not the guessing team. Ensure that all of the sliding tabs are hiding the check marks.

  • Read the topic to the guessing team. Flip the timer to begin the guessing team's turn.

  • Shout out answers if you are the guessing team, the louder the better. All players guess at the same time so make sure you are heard. If your guess is correct, the player holding the card viewer will say "yes" and slide the sliding tab over. Your team has one minute to guess as many answers as possible.

  • Read out the answers that the guessing team did not guess correct. On the scoreboard, slide your team's marker one space for each correct answer. Check to see if your team had guessed the bonus point answer; for example, if at the beginning of your turn, you rolled a 6 on the 10-sided die, and if you guessed the answer in the slot marked 6, your team gains an additional three points.

  • Play now passes to the other team and it repeats the above steps.

  • Win the game by being the first team to reach 50 points.

Tips & Warnings

  • Outburst Jr. contains two sets of topic cards: yellow and orange. The yellow topic cards are simpler than the orange topic cards. To ensure that the game is fair, younger children answer the yellow cards and older children answer the orange cards. If all of the players are the same age, mix the yellow and orange cards into one pile.
