How to Make Blurred Out Edges in GIMP

You can use Gimp, a free program, to create images and edit photos. Gimp has a wide variety of filters and capabilities that help beginners achieve professional-looking results. You can use the Decor Filter "Fuzzy Border" to make blurred-out edges, selecting the settings for the particular effect to produce customized results. The color, size and granularity of the border is all in your control.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Gimp and open the picture you want to blur by clicking "File" and "Open." Scroll though your documents to locate the image. Click it and select "Open."

    • 2

Click the "Filters" tab and place your cursor over "Decor." Click "Fuzzy Border" from the options that appear. The "Script-Fu Fuzzy Border" pop-up box will appear.

    • 3

Input your desired settings. Click the "Color" rectangle to view a "Color Selection" box. Select the color you want your border to blur into and press "OK." Type into the "Border size" field the number of your choice, such as 20, and confirm that the "Blur border" box is checked.

    • 4

Use the scroll bar to adjust "Granularity." For a more uniform look, keep the granularity at a level of 1. Decide if you want to check the "Add shadow" box, and press "OK" to implement the border effect. The blurred-out copy of your picture will appear in its own workbook as long as you kept "Work on Copy" checked.

    • 5

Save your edited copy by clicking on "File" and "Save As." Type a desired file name followed by a picture extension, such as ".jpg."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not like the blurred-out settings you chose, simply close the copy of your picture and reopen the "Script-Fu Fuzzy Border" dialog to begin anew.

  • You can save your file using Gimp's native extension ".xcf," but you will likely experience trouble trying to view your file in any program other than Gimp as the extension is not widely supported. When sharing the file with non-Gimp users or when uploading it to the Web, save your file using an extension compatible with the other tools you are trying to use.
