When it comes to display port standards, computers and HDTVs share many connection types. HDMI, VGA and DVI ports are increasingly common on both devices. Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your TV and computer.

    • 2

Examine your Compaq computer and the backside of your TV to see which ports both devices have in common. S-Video cables are a circular port with several internal pins, while DVI and VGA cables are rhombus-shaped jacks with multiple rows of pins and blocks. HDMI ports are semi-rectangular and labelled "HDMI."

    • 3

Use the cable appropriate for whichever port your TV and Compaq computer share in common to connect both devices together.

    • 4

Turn on your TV and Compaq computer. Set your TV's display mode to your chosen connection method --- "HDMI" if both devices are connected via HDMI, for instance --- to use it as a secondary monitor. Here, your TV will function like your computer. You will be able to open up and display files or other content on the TV.

Open up your video playback source --- this can include YouTube videos or personal movies --- and use your mouse to drag its window over to the TV. From here, you can begin playing the video, which will be displayed on your TV.
