A sprinkler system is actually a type of irrigation system. In many cities and counties, you will need to receive a special permit before you are legally able to install a sprinkler system on your property. Different areas may have slightly different processes for obtaining this permit, but there are some general guidelines to follow that should get you the paperwork you need to install your sprinkler system.
Choose a plumbing contractor before getting your permit if you're going to use one to install your sprinkler system. The contractor needs to be licensed by your state and familiar with the state plumbing code.
Get a permit application for the sprinkler system from your local Inspections and Permits Department. This document can sometimes be found on your city or county website.
Fill out the application in full. Include the address where the sprinkler system will be installed, the location of your water meter, the proposed locations of all sprinkler heads and the name of the plumbing contractor. If you're not using a contractor, add your name to this space.
Submit the completed application, along with any processing fee, to your local Inspections and Permits Department. Once the application is processed and approved, you will receive your permit and can then install the sprinkler system.
