How to Paint a Sunflower on a Barn

Add a painted sunflower to the exterior of your barn.

If your old barn has a boring appearance, you may consider adding a painted image to one of its walls to transform mundane into motivating. Painted sunflowers can be a great addition to a barn's plain exterior. If you are raising flowers on your farm, a painted sunflower can act as an advertisement to attract new customers. Regardless, bright sunflowers will make your barn stand out from the rest.

Things You'll Need

• Yellow exterior paint
• Green exterior paint
• Brown exterior paint
• Large paint brush
• Detailing paint brush
• White paint
• Black paint

Instructions

1. Sketch out an illustration on a piece of paper of what you would like the final sunflower image to look like. This will allow you to experiment with the sunflower design before beginning your painting.

2. Dust off the part of the barn where you are planning to paint the sunflower. Removing debris from the barn's surface will prevent the paint from lifting.

3. Draw your sunflower pattern at a larger scale onto the barn's surface, using a permanent marker.

4. Paint the sunflower's stem in a green outdoor paint, using a large brush. If desired, add leaves to the stem and grass behind the sunflower.

5. Paint the sunflower's petals with a large brush, using yellow outdoor paint.

6. Paint the sunflower's brown interior, using a large brush.

7. Allow the paints to thoroughly dry.

8. Add highlights to the sunflower image using a small detailing brush. Use white to highlight elements of the sunflower such as the petals, the seedy interior of the flower, and the tips of the stem. Use streaks of darker colors to shadow the sunflower and create definition between the sunflower's numerous petals.
