Wordpress has an open-source, plugin database which includes a number of audio, playback software. Plugins are code snippets that may be used to enhance the functionality of Wordpress sites.
An online jukebox needs two important elements in order to function properly; a song database and playback software. Perhaps a plugin installation is all that is needed to post a jukebox in Wordpress.
Music upload and management interfaces are provided with most audio plugins available at Wordpress. Plugins, which are popular and well maintained, have higher downloads, thus carry a large number of active users.
Things You'll Need
- Audio plugin
- Music database
Log in to the Wordpress admin panel.
Go through the left-hand navigation pane, and locate "Plugins." Click on "Add New" under plugins, so the plugin search page will load.
Insert "audio playlist manager" in the search box, and click the "Search Plugins" button to the right. Click the "Install" link for the "audio playlist manager with autoresume" plugin which will be the first search result. The auto-resume feature makes the player pause for page loads, and start automatically afterward, instead of stopping the player altogether. If auto-resume is not needed, install the second search result - "Tierra's audio playlist manager."
Click on the "Activate Plugin" link when prompted.
Click "Tierra Audio Playlists" under "Settings" in the left-hand navigation menu. If there are any server limitations for uploads, a warning message may appear at the top of the page with instructions to enhance memory capacity as well. If the music files and the plugin options can be managed within the allowed capacity, ignore the warning.
Upload music files to the server via the "Add New Media File" form at the bottom of the page. Alternatively upload files to the "Uploads" folder via an FTP client, and add the music files to the playlists by specifying each URL within the "Add New Media File" form.
Create playlists using the uploaded audio files. Name the playlists with recognizable, meaningful names, e.g., name of the artist, or the genre of music.
Click "Widgets" under "Appearance," in the main navigational menu to the left. Notice the new widget named "Tierra Audio Playlist Player." Drag this widget to one of the sidebars to the right.
Configure the options for the music player widget, and specify the playlist to use.
Load the front end of the Wordpress site in different browsers, and test the playback of the jukebox.
Tips & Warnings
- The jukebox player may be posted in any location of a Wordpress site, although a common place such as the sidebar is suitable for a music player.
- Give preference to plugins that are constantly updated, and possess good support features, e.g., active user forums.
- Evaluate compatibility of the plugins against the Wordpress version, before installation. Incompatible plugins may not only be a burden, but also create unexpected errors to the site.
