Flag ceremonies are conducted by a color guard and caller.

Presenting the colors is the duty of a color guard during a flag ceremony. The color guard protects the flag and stands at attention during the event in question. The ceremony also includes a caller, the person who issues commands to the color guard. Leading a flag ceremony requires following a basic set of protocols regarding the handling of the U.S. flag and the issuance of related commands.

Instructions

    • 1

Order the color guard to get into formation. The U.S. flag should be in the front of the procession. The caller brings the color guard to attention and asks the audience to stand at attention for the presentation of the colors.

    • 2

Announce "Color guard advance" to the color guard. The guard will march toward the front of the room or audience to present the colors.

    • 3

Announce "Color guard honor your colors." The color guard will salute the U.S. flag and then return to the position of attention.

    • 4

Ask the audience to join you in the Pledge of Allegiance.

    • 5

Announce "Color guard dismissed." The color guard will retreat from the front of the room or audience.
