Calls merge during a three-way call on the iPhone.

When you make a three-way call on your iPhone 3GS, you create a conference between you and two other callers. During the three-way call, each person on the call is able to interact with each other in real-time. Depending on your mobile service plan, when you make a three-way call, you may incur charges for making the call, so you'll want to check that your plan covers it ahead of time.
