How to Babysit a 2-Year-Old Girl

Save

There is a great deal of responsibility that comes along with babysitting a 2-year-old girl. While toddlers may be able to walk and talk, they still require diaper changes and constant care and attention. If you have been asked to babysit a 2-year-old, there are steps you can take to prepare yourself for whatever you may encounter and to have the best day possible for you and your ward.

Things You'll Need

  • Emergency contact list
  • Schedule
  • Learn how to properly change a diaper to prepare yourself for any diaper changes that the 2-year-old may need. Most 2-year-old girls are not entirely potty-trained.

  • Prepare for any emergency situation by educating yourself on proper child lifesaving techniques and by preparing a list of emergency contacts. While it is unlikely that an emergency will occur, it is always better to err on the side of caution.

  • Discuss the child's typical schedule with her parents and try to stick to it as closely as possible. Children respond best to routines, so by sticking to one, a 2-year-old girl is more likely to behave well while she is in your care.

  • Talk about rules and punishments with her parents. Many parents have a preferred method of punishment -- timeouts, privilege restrictions, earlier bedtime -- and by discussing this with the girl's parents, you can anticipate any temper tantrums or attempts to push the boundaries of your role as babysitter.

  • Plan activities for you and the little girl to do together. These activities can be coloring, watching a movie or her favorite television show, playing with her favorite dolls or toys, or even building a living room fort.

  • Set up times for snacks and meals. Discuss any food allergies with the girl's parents.

  • Keep an eye on the child at all times. Because children can get into trouble in the blink of an eye, any child you are babysitting should never be out of your sight.
