How to Find a Wi-Fi Gateway Address on XP

When you boot Windows XP, the operating system grabs an IP address from the local gateway router. The gateway router assigns an IP address to your computer, and the gateway IP address for the router is also stored in your Windows XP settings. To find the IP address for the gateway, you use the Windows XP command line utility.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the XP "Start" button on your computer. Choose "Run" from the list of menu options. Type "cmd" in the text box and press "Enter." This opens the command prompt in XP.

    • 2

Type "ipconfig" and press "Enter." A list of network adapters is shown. If you have more than one adapter, you must locate the adapter for the Wi-Fi connection.

    • 3

View the network adapter marked as the "Wireless Adapter." In this section, the Wi-Fi gateway is displayed. View the IP address listed in the section labeled "Default Gateway." This is the Wi-Fi gateway IP address.
