Blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are seasonal and best enjoyed during summer months. There is a way to freeze blueberries, raspberries and blackberries to capture the flavors of summer all year long. If you have a garden, pick the berries at their peak for best flavor. If you purchase the berries from a grocery store or farmers market, be sure they are fresh and sweet. Rinse the berries with cold running water using a strainer. Let the berries drain for approximately 15 minutes. Toss berries twice during the draining period to release any water that has been trapped inside the berry.

Place berries on paper towels and let them air dry. The berries need to be completely dry so no ice crystals will form while freezing. Ice crystal can cause freezer burn, which will alter the taste of the berries.

Place the berries, in one layer, on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the freezer until all the berries are frozen solid.

Remove the berries from the freezer and quickly place them in self-sealing freezer bags. Remove as much air from the freezer bags as possible. Place the bags of berries quickly into the freezer once you have filled and sealed them. The berries will keep up to 5 months if properly stored.

Add frozen berries to fruit smoothies or defrost and enjoy them alone or in a favorite recipe.
