How to Set Up a Seagate External Drive


Seagate external drives allow you to back up and store important files and sensitive information. If you have information that is taking up space on your computer's hard drive but do not want to erase those files, you can transfer them to an external drive for safekeeping. An external drive can also be portable; you can take your Seagate drive between your home and office in order to save and transfer data. Before you begin storing data on the device for the first time, there are a few steps you should take to ensure proper and safe use.

  • USB cable
  • Install the Seagate external drive's drivers, if necessary; the only version of Windows this is required for is Windows 98SE. Versions Windows Me, 2000 Pro, XP, Vista and 7 will automatically install the drivers once the external drive is connected. To install the drivers, go to Seagate's website and click "Download the drivers for Windows 98SE and USB connections." Click "Run" to install the driver, then restart your computer.

  • Plug one end of the drive's power cord into the power supply socket on the back of the external drive and the other end into an electrical outlet.

  • Connect one end of the USB cord to the port on the external drive and the other end to an open USB port on your computer.

  • Press the Seagate external drive's power button, located on the back of the device, to turn it on. The computer's operating system will assign the device a drive letter; after that, the device is ready to use. A green light on the external drive will turn on to indicate that the device is active.

  • Access the Seagate external hard drive's folder. Click "Computer" inside the Start menu to see a list of storage drives connected to the computer. Double-click the drive labeled "Seagate" to open the Seagate external hard drive's folder.
