How to Install Pavestone on Dirt
You can install pave stone on dirt to create a walkway or patio in your yard. The process of laying the pave stone is not difficult but you need to properly prepare the area before you install the walkway or patio. Preparing the ground will provide a solid foundation for the pave stone to sit on. A compacted bed of gravel under a layer of sand will create the ideal foundation for the pave stones. - Landscaper's spray paint
- Shovel
- Plate compactor
- Gravel
- Sand
- 2 conduit lengths, 1-inch diameter, length of sides
- 2-by-4-inch board, length of sides
- Pave stone
- Level
- Rubber mallet
- Shop broom

Select an area for the pave stone walkway or patio. Mark off the dimensions of the surface with landscaper's spray paint.

Dig out the marked off area with a shovel to a depth of 8 inches. Run a plate compactor back and forth over the entire area to compact the soil.

Fill in the dug out area with approximately 6 inches of gravel. Fill half of the depth at a time and compact it by running over it with a plate compactor. This will provide a firm base for the pave stone.

Fill in the remaining depth of the dug out area with sand. Lay 1-inch conduit along each side of the sand. Drag a 2-by-4-inch board across the top of the conduit and pull it in an even motion along the surface to smooth out the sand.

Lay the pave stone end to end in rows over the surface. Place a level on each pave stone as you place it in the sand. Adjust it for level by tapping it with a rubber mallet.

Fill in the completed pave stone surface with sand by placing a pile of sand on the surface and sweeping it into the joints using a shop broom. Sweep off the excess sand. Remove the conduit from the sides.
