How to Put Security on Your Computer for Wireless Internet
A wireless Internet connection allows you to use your Internet access on mulitple computers within your home. However, when you set up a wireless network in your home, the signal doesn't only remain there. Someone who lives close by or is in close proximity to your home can access your network if you do not protect it. Therefore, it is important to take safety precautions to make your computer and home wireless network secure.

1
Set up your router to require a password to gain access to the Internet. Each router is different and comes with its own set of instructions for securing your network. Choose a password you will remember but others who know you cannot guess. This is so you can add more computers later without other people being able to gain access to your network.

2
Use the Network Security Key feature on Windows. In the "Control Panel," click on "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center." Click "Set up a connection or network" link on the left side of the box. Choose "Set up a wireless router and access point" in the "Choose a connection" box and click "Next." Windows will lead you through the process for creating a network security key.

3
Install a good firewall on your computer to prevent unauthorized access. Windows comes with its own firewall or you can buy an after-market firewall from a company that offers security software. To activate your Windows firewall, go into the "Control Panel" and click on "Security" and then "Windows Firewall." This allows you to toggle the Windows firewall on and off. Do not turn it off unless you have another firewall installed on your computer or you will leave your computer open to attack or a breach.

4
Use updated anti-virus software. Many companies offer anti-virus software, some of them free. This helps protect your computer from any incoming viruses, including some that may make your network available to hackers.

5
Turn off the file-sharing option on your computer to eliminate access to your files from other computers. To do so, go to "My Computer" and click on the "Tools" menu. Click "Folder Options" and choose the "View" tab. Under "Advanced Settings" uncheck the box next to "Use simple file sharing." Click "OK" at the bottom of the box to implement your new settings. This prevents others from accessing files on your computer.

Tips & Warnings
Watch out for false wireless access points disguised as company-sponsored access. These access points are designed to steal passwords and other sensitive information from users. Always make sure you are using a legitimate Wi-Fi connection by speaking with the company that offers it.
