How to Remove Read-Only Attributes From Folders and Files

Windows allows you to make edits to various types of files as long as you use supported programs that can properly modify them. For instance, Windows Notepad lets you modify text documents. However, you may encounter an error that prevents you from saving a modified file because it has a read-only setting. Remove this attribute from any files that you want to freely edit.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click any file or folder that has the read-only attribute and click "Properties."

    • 2

Go to the "General" tab and clear the "Read-only" check box by clicking on it.

    • 3

Click the "OK" or "Apply" button to remove the read-only attribute.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hold the "Ctrl" key on the keyboard and click on multiple files if you want to remove the read-only attribute from all the selected files. Right-click on any of these files and perform the steps to finish the process.
