Your roof is one of the most important investments that you can make toward protecting the structure of your home. The roof allows water to run off the top of your house into your gutters, which then carry the water away from your home and foundation. It is important to keep your roof clean and free from debris, such as pine needles. Regular roof cleaning and maintenance will prevent rot and will extend the life of your shingles.
Things You'll Need
- Leaf blower
- Pruning sheers
Place a ladder against the side of your house. The ladder should be tall enough to place against the gutters so that you may easily reach the roof line. Have someone hold the ladder for safety.
Climb on to your roof and remove any large sticks and limbs and throw them to the ground below. Wear rubber soled shoes to ensure traction and to prevent damage to the shingles.
Blow the pine straw and leaves off the edge of the roof using a leaf blower. Walk to the top of the roof and take care to blow down, from the top of the roof to the ground, so that you do not rip the shingles off of the roof.
Prune back or cut any limbs that hang over the top of your roof to help prevent accumulation of pine straw.
