How to Change Your User Name on Wikipedia

Changing your username for your Wikipedia account involves a relatively simple request procedure, which is then approved and implemented -- or denied -- by a Wikipedia "bureaucrat," or volunteer user who assists in handling administrative changes and requests. Requesting a username change is appropriate if you are an active writer or editor.

  • Open the main Wikipedia page, click "Help" and choosing "Account Settings and Maintenance" to open the Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple page.

  • Log in using your current username and password.

  • Click "this list" next to "2" on the Wikipedia page.

  • Type your desired user name into the text box labeled "Display Users Starting At." Click "Go" to determine if your desired username is already in use. If your desired username is already claimed, choose another name.

  • Return to the "Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple" page and click on the "Click here to place a request" link.

  • Enter your request for a name change into the text box, using this format:

    CURRENT= (current username)

    NEW= (desired username)

    REASON= (reason for change)

  • Click "Save Page" to save your request. Check the "Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple" page for a response to your request.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a Wikipedia account that you have not used very often, and there are few edits attached to it, you can just create a new account.
  • Just as inactive users cannot change their usernames, Wikipedia will not change any username associated with an account that has made more than 50,000 edits or entries.
