How to Apply Sherwin Williams Polane Paint

Sherwin-Williams Polane paint is a polyurethane paint designed to coat plastic, metal, wood and Styrofoam or other foams. The paint comes in high-gloss, semigloss and textured formulas and is available in a variety of colors. Polane paint creates a hard finish that resists staining by many common substances, including coffee, motor oil, ammonia, alcohol and soda. The application process is not difficult, but there are several steps involved, which can make it a little tricky. Apply the coating outdoors in sunny, warm weather with low wind for best results.

Things You'll Need:

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Mild soap cleaner
  • Soft cloths
  • Primer suitable for base surface
  • Paint sprayer
  • Stirring stick
  • Polane paint with catalyst and reducer

Clean the surface of the item being painted to remove all grease and dirt. Use rubbing alcohol for metal or plastic and regular soap for wood or foam. Allow the surface to dry for an hour before priming.

Prime the base surface with a spray primer. Use a formula designed for use with the base surface, such as a metal primer for metal, or foam primer for foam. Allow the primer to dry for two hours.

Mix four parts Polane paint, one part catalyst and one-quarter part reducer. The Polane paint comes in three separate parts, including the paint reducer and catalyst, for you to mix at home before use. Stir with a stirring stick to mix all parts together equally. Pour the mixture into the paint sprayer.

Spray the paint onto the base surface using even spray and pressure. Allow the paint to dry for 30 minutes between coats. Apply between three and five coats for best results. Allow the paint to dry overnight before storing or using the object.
