The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is sometimes incorrectly referred to as the Heath Insurance Portability and Privacy Act (HIPPA.) HIPAA, was originally enacted by Congress in 1996 to organize healthcare administration. Since then, several additions have been made to the bill, increasing the safeguarding of patient information. In 2003, Congress implemented standards for the safeguarding and exchange of patient record information. Three levels of HIPAA certification exist: Certified HIPAA Professional (CHP), Certified HIPAA Security Specialist (CHSS) and Certified HIPAA Administrator (CHP). Several online certification sources offer course work and testing for certification.

Determine which HIPAA certification course meets your needs. The CHA course explains legislation that affect how healthcare workers administer services to patients. The CHP course targets hospitals, pharmacies, laboratories, clearinghouses and payers, focusing on “HIPAA transactions, code sets, identifiers, privacy and security." Anyone implementing healthcare policies should take this course. According to, the CHSS training addresses “required implementation specifications and associated security technologies and policies” related to HIPAA compliance. The CHP certification is a prerequisite for CHSS certification. IT professionals should take this course to understand regulations for information access and transmission.

Enroll in a training course. HIPAA certification companies offer training online or in the classroom. Choose the training that will be most effective for your learning style (see Resources).

Study the training material after completion of the course. Ensure you know the principles of the material thoroughly.

Enroll in a certification exam. Timed certification exams are administered online. According for, each exam is 60 minutes long and requires answering 75% of the questions correctly to pass.
