How to Activate an Apple Mobile Device

Save

The iTunes application uses the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) to recognize an iPhone, iPod touch or an iPad that is connected to your computer. If an error appears stating "The Apple Mobile Device Service is not Started," then you will not be able to use iTunes with your Apple mobile device. To solve this problem on a Windows computer, you will need to restart the service. On a Mac computer, you need to delete the service and iTunes, then re-install iTunes.

Windows

  • Close the iTunes application if it is open and disconnect your Apple device.

  • Click "Start" then type "Services" in the Search field.

  • Click "Services" in the search results list under "Programs." The Services window opens.

  • Click "Apple Mobile Device," then click "Stop the Service" under "Apple Mobile Device."

  • Click "Start the Service" after the service has stopped to activate it

  • Launch iTunes and re-connect your Apple device to the computer.

Mac

  • Disconnect your Apple device from your Mac if it is connected. Click the "Finder" icon in the dock, then click the "Applications" folder in the left-pane of the window.

  • Scroll through the list of applications, then click on the "iTunes" icon and drag it into the Trash.

  • Click "Go" on the menu bar at the top of the desktop, then select "Go to Folder" from the drop-down list. Type "/System/Library/Extensions," then click "Go." Click the "AppleMobileDevice.kext" file and drag it into the Trash.

  • Click "Go" on the menu bar at the top of the desktop, then select "Go to Folder" from the drop-down list. Type "/Library/Receipts/," then click "Go." Click the "AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg" file and drag it into the Trash. Restart your Mac computer.

  • Click the "Trash" icon, and then click "Finder" on the menu bar at the top of the screen and select "Empty Trash." Confirm the action on the pop-up window.

  • Download iTunes and re-install it. Re-connect your Apple device to the computer.
