How to Sync Gmail With Facebook

Due to their constant disagreements over users' information and how to protect their privacy, the two largest sites on the Internet, Google and Facebook, no longer make it easy to import or export contact or friend data from one site to the other. While the reasons for the disagreements are somewhat complex, the result is simple: it makes syncing contacts on the two sites considerably more difficult. Though there is no simple way to keep contacts or friends on the sites synchronized, a couple of manual workarounds allow you to maintain contact with your friends on both services.

Import Facebook Friends to Gmail

  • Visit the Google website and download the Chrome browser. Double-click the download file and follow the on-screen prompts to install Chrome on your computer. Reboot the PC if prompted to do so.

  • Launch Chrome on your computer and go to the Chrome Web Store page for the Facebook Friend Exporter application. Click the "Install" button to install the add-on into your browser.

  • Go to the Facebook log-in page. Log in with your email address and password. After you log in, you will notice an "Export Friends!" link at the top of your profile page.

  • Click the "Export Friends!" link. Click the "Redirect Now" link when prompted.

  • Accept the Terms of Service and click "Let's get started!" After pictures of all of your Facebook friends appear on the new page, click the "Let's Start!" button.

  • Wait for the add-on application to retrieve information about your Facebook friends. Depending on the number of friends you have on Facebook, the process could take a few minutes or several hours.

  • Download and save the "CSV" file the add-on produces to your computer.

  • Log in to your Gmail account. Click the "Contacts" link on the left side of the page. Click "More actions," then "Import."

  • Click the "Browse" button. Go to the downloaded "CSV" file on your computer. Highlight the file name and click "Open."

  • Select the "Import" button and wait for Gmail to import your Facebook friends as contacts. After Gmail imports the information from the CSV file, your Facebook friends appear in your "Contacts" list.

Export Gmail Contacts to Facebook

  • Log in to your Gmail account. Click the "Contacts" link on the left side of the page.

  • Click "Export" on the "More actions" drop-down menu.

  • Select the "All Contacts" option, then "Outlook CSV format (for importing into Outlook or another application)." Click the "Export" button.

  • Download the "contacts.csv" file and save it to your computer.

  • Log in to your Facebook account. Click the "Account" drop-down list link at the top of your profile page. Click "Edit Friends." Click the "Find Friends" link on the left side of the page.

  • Scroll down to and click the "Other Tools" link. Click "Upload Contact File." Click the "Browse" button and go to the "contacts.csv" file you save earlier. Click the "Open" button.

  • Wait while Facebook uploads the CSV file from your computer and displays Friend information on a new page. Click the "Select All Friends" option, then "Add as Friends."

  • Click the "Send Invites" button to invite contacts in your Gmail list that are not Facebook members to join and be your friend on Facebook. Otherwise, click "Skip."

  • Click the "Profile" link at the top of the Find Friends page to return to your Facebook profile.

Tips & Warnings

  • The only sure way to import your Facebook friends into Gmail is with the Google Chrome add-on extension. No working extensions are available for Firefox or Internet Explorer.
