How to Find My Service Tag Number for My Dell Inspiron Laptop

Save

Dell uses a computer's service tag number to look up the computer's records in its system. This helps the company identify the components of the system and the warranty information for that particular computer. The Dell Inspiron line of laptops includes easy access to the service tag number and associated Express Service Code, both physically and through the company's website. The Express Service Code is the numeric version of the alphanumeric service tag number, which is useful when contacting Dell's technical support by telephone.

Physical Identification

  • Power down the Dell Inspiron laptop.

  • Close the laptop cover and carefully turn the laptop over so you can see the bottom panel.

  • Locate the white strip with the title "Service Tag" preceding an alphanumeric code with five or seven characters. The five- or seven-character alphanumeric code is the service tag number for the Dell Inspiron laptop. This is found on the upper left side of the bottom of the laptop when it is upside down, just above the manufacturing information.

Digital Identification

  • Turn the Dell Inspiron laptop on and access the Internet to navigate to the Dell technical support Web page (support.dell.com).

  • Type "find my service tag" in the search box and click "Enter." Click "Looking for support for your Dell product?"

  • Click "Find my service tag."

  • Click "Yes, I do agree" in the pop-up box asking if the Dell system can scan your computer. This may prompt the installation of a Dell service program, which is required to scan the computer for the service tag number. If the software is already installed, this step is not required.

  • Locate the service tag number on the resulting Web page that loads after the program scans your computer. It is labeled "Service Tag:" for easy identification, followed by an alphanumeric code with five or seven characters.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Dell website is optimized for the latest version of Windows Internet Explorer.
