Fin propulsion through the water gives you the feeling of graceful freedom and control. Buy the right fins, wear them properly and maintain them with care, and you'll enjoy countless hours in the water.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Buy fins that fit you well. They should be snug, but not so tight that they cut off circulation.
Step2
Wear diving booties or reef booties with heavy, stiff rubber diving fins.
Step3
Wear a thin sock with softer rubber swimming fins.
Step4
Lube the inside edges of the fin with petroleum jelly.
Step5
Apply anti-chafing or blister pads to previously affected areas ' you can buy them at any drugstore.
Step6
Rinse fins with fresh water after use.
Step7
Store fins at room temperature and out of direct sunlight to prevent deterioration of the rubber.

Tips & Warnings

  • Change fins or add a layer of foot protection ' such as another sock or anti-chafing pad ' as soon as you notice any discomfort.
  • Test fins in the water prior to purchasing them, if you have that option. Fins will feel much different when wet and in use than they will on dry feet in a store.
  • Snorkeling is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
