How to Make Text Bold in GIMP

GIMP is a freeware graphics application that many people who cannot afford Photoshop use to create graphics and documents for things like signs of fliers. For the most part, GIMP has all the tools you would expect from a professional level commercial product. However, there are a few exceptions. One of these is lack of a feature for making a text font bold. You can normally only have bold text in GIMP if the font itself comes with a bold versions, such as Arial Bold. However, there is a way around this problem.

  • Open GIMP. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog, choose a document you want to add bold text to and open it.

  • Select the "Text" tool from the toolbar. Choose the font style and size you want from the options and type in your text.

  • Select "Windows" from the menu and choose "Layers" under "Dockable Dialogs" to make the "Layers" panel appear. Go to the "Layers" panel and right-click on the text layer. Select "Text to Selection."

  • Select "Select" from the menu at the top and choose "Grow." In the dialog, choose the width you want the letter to grow and click "OK."

  • Click on the "New Layer" button at the bottom of the "Layers" panel. In the dialog, choose "Transparency" and click "OK." Select the "Paintbucket" tool from the toolbar and use it to fill the selection with the color of your choice.
