How to Be Lead by the Spirit of God

As a Christian, you know how important it is to follow God's leading when it comes to making important decisions that concern your family, life goals, or overall well-being. While it can sometimes be challenging to know when you're being led by the spirit of God, or the Holy Spirit, keeping a few methods in mind will give you the confidence and security of knowing that you're following the Lord's instruction.

Things You'll Need

  • Bible
  • Quiet room
  • Prayer
  • Friends or loved ones
  • Ask God for the intelligence to make the right choice. James 1:5 states "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking" (NIV). This means that all you have to do is ask the spirit of God how to handle your relationships, which career to pursue, or how to take control of your health. If you're willing to hear the answer, God will respond to your inquiries, and not judge you harshly for requesting advice.

  • Have faith that God will give you the answers you seek--you can do this by reading the Bible. This is based on the scripture that says "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). When you read the word of God, it increases your faith and boosts your confidence when you feel promptings to make changes in your life for the better.

  • Pray about the issues in your life you're pondering and continue to ask for God's leading. Have honest conversations with God when you're confused about whether you should end a relationship or friendship, take on a new project at work, or aren't sure how to discipline your children. Take time to do this in a quiet room where you won't be interrupted, so your mind and heart will be open to the answers the spirit of God will relay to your mind and heart.

  • Talk with a Christian friend or family member who has been in a similar situation, and ask them for signs they experienced that confirmed they were following God's leading. This will help you to better connect with the emotions you've been experiencing so you can determine if your previous decisions have been a result of your own feelings or the direction of the Holy Spirit. Ask your loved one to pray with you to strengthen your connection with God and receive definite answers from Him, based on Matthew 18:20-"For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them."

  • Pray continually--even while you're acting on the direction God has given. For instance, if you've been praying about starting your own business, ask God for the right time to quit your current job. Continue praying as you look for the right building to house your new company in, and while you're selecting employees to join your team. As you accomplish each task, thank God for sending his spirit to chart your course, according to 1 Thessalonians 5:18--"give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
