How to Determine Ports for a MagicJack

MagicJack is a Voice over IP (VoIP) service that allows users to make local and long distance phone calls using a high-speed Internet connection and computer at a fraction of the cost of a traditional landline. Some users may find that an Internet firewall degrades the voice quality of calls placed using the MagicJack. To improve voice quality, users can determine the network ports used by the MagicJack and open them. The procedure requires that you access the setup menu on your router.

Things You'll Need

  • MagicJack
  • Telephone handset
  • Router
  • Computer

  • Plug the MagicJack into an available USB port on your computer.

  • Plug your telephone handset into the phone jack on the Magic Jack.

  • Turn your computer on.

Setting Up Your Firewall

  • Open a Web browser and navigate to your router's configuration page. For most routers, you would type "" or "" into the browser's address bar. You will be prompted for your username and password. The default settings are typically "admin" and "admin" on most routers.

  • Go to your router's firewall or security settings. Usually, you will see a tab labeled "Firewall" or "Security" at the main menu and clicking on the tab will allow you to access the security options. Once there, look for your router's "Port Forwarding" settings.

  • Enable port forwarding for ports "5060 UDP" and "5070 UDP."

  • Reboot your router and computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are unable to locate the security menu on your router, check the user manual and review the instructions for port forwarding.
  • Use caution when adjusting port settings on your router. If you configure these settings incorrectly, your computer could be left vulnerable to malicious attacks by hackers.
