Only one Web browser can be the default Web page viewer on a single operating system.

Like many people, you probably like one Web browser over another. Telling your computer what you prefer to use would save you time and make Web surfing more convenient for you. To effectively switch from application to another, you can set one as the default browser from within the program and then configure the other so it never asks to be the default again. Both Internet Explorer and Firefox allow you to do this in a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Mozilla Firefox by entering the term "firefox" in the Start menu search bar or by clicking its shortcut in the Start menu or desktop.

    • 2

Click "Yes" when Firefox asks if you would like to make it the default Web browser. If you want Firefox to ask you this question every whenever it is not your default browser, check the box for "Always perform this check when starting Firefox."

Launch Internet Explorer. If a pop up dialog box appears asking "Would you like to make Internet Explorer your default browser?" click 'No." If you do not want Internet Explorer to perform this check again, click "Don't ask me again" instead.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to view an HTML file in Internet Explorer even when it is no longer your default browser, right-click the file in any Windows folder, click "Open with" and select "Internet Explorer."

  • Another way to make sure Firefox is the default browser is by going to the "Tools" menu, clicking 'Options" and then clicking "Advanced." From there, click the "General" tab and click "Check Now" and "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on start up."
