Learning to Sew With Practice Worksheets

Learning to Sew With Practice Worksheets thumbnail
Sewing with a sewing machine takes moderate practice.

Learning how to sew requires the mastery of a sewing machine, practicing the process of stitching straight and curved lines. Because sewing fabric means stitching seams, before you begin working with fabric, practice on paper first. Learning to sew with practice worksheets enables you to master skills by following printed lines. After you become adept at controlling the sewing machine, you will be ready to sew seams in fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw straight lines on the paper with the ruler and the marker. Make a large rectangle about 1 inch inside the outer edges of the paper. Make another rectangle 2 inches smaller than the first rectangle. Make one more rectangle 2 inches smaller than the second rectangle.

    • 2

Draw curved lines on the paper with the marker. Make a large circle or oval just inside the outer edges of the paper. Make a second smaller circle or oval inside the first shape.

    • 3

Cut a piece of muslin fabric the same size as each piece of paper.

    • 4

Place the muslin fabric under the practice worksheet paper, lining up the edges and corners.

    • 5

Thread the sewing machine with a brightly colored thread that will enable you to see your stitching lines easily.

    • 6

Set the sewing machine stitch length to 2.5 or 3.

    • 7

Place the fabric and paper into the sewing machine, lining up the needle onto one of the lines.

    • 8

Stitch slowly, making the needle stay on the lines you drew on the paper. Continue stitching and following the lines.

    • 9

Remove the paper and fabric from the sewing machine when you finish following all the lines on the worksheet.

    • 10

Tear away the worksheet paper from the fabric to reveal the lines you sewed.
