How to Turn Off AutoPlay Using Regedit

Windows AutoRun is a function that automatically recognizes connected devices, such as USB flash drives or CD-ROMs, and attempts to play the media or open the files on the device with a pre-selected program. If you prefer to manually open your files without the help of Windows AutoRun, you can disable the function in the Windows registry. To make changes to the registry, you must access the registry editor. Only make recommended changes to the registry, other changes can damage your operating system installation and prevent your system from properly booting.

Instructions

      Press the "Windows" + "R" on your keyboard simultaneously. The Windows Run dialog box will appear.

      Input "regedit" and press "Enter." The Windows registry editor will appear.

      Locate the following key, using the paths in the left window pane:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

      Click on "Edit" in the file menu of the registry editor and select "New" > "DWORD Value." A new value will appear in the right window pane.

      Type in "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" and press "Enter" to name the new value.

      Right-click "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" and select "Modify." A dialog box will appear.

      Enter "FF" as the "Value data" and click "OK." Exit the registry editor and restart your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" registry key already exists, simply modify the key and change the "Value data" to "FF."
