How to Mix Something With Chlorine Bleach thumbnail
Do not add vinegar to a laundry cycle with chlorine bleach.

Chlorine bleach effectively and economically sanitizes hard surfaces, killing disease-causing bacteria. It also whitens fabrics and removes stains. Chlorine bleach is safe to use as directed, but when mixed with vinegar or ammonia, it releases toxic fumes that cause lung irritation, breathing difficulties or even death. Many cleaning products contain ammonia. To avoid inadvertently mixing ammonia and chlorine bleach, never mix cleaning chemicals. Mix chlorine bleach with water, or dish soap and water only. Add 1 tsp. chlorine bleach to soapy water when washing dishes or toys. The solution kills any bacteria, reducing the chance of disease. Sanitize toys weekly during an outbreak of communicable disease, such as cold or flu, or if there are several young children present such as in a home daycare.

    • 3

Add 1/4 cup chlorine bleach to the wash cycle when washing whites to remove stains and brighten fabrics. Add bleach to the water as the machine fills. Don't pour bleach directly on fabric; this causes staining and weakens fabric fibers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Chlorine bleach and water solutions effectively kill 99.9 percent of listeria, salmonella and E.coli bacteria. Bleach solutions lose their effectiveness over time. Make a new solution each week.

  • Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar are safe alternatives to chlorine bleach. Heat hydrogen peroxide or vinegar to 130 degrees Fahrenheit to sanitize hard surfaces. Wait 10 minutes before wiping up unheated hydrogen peroxide and vinegar to effectively kill bacteria. Add borax to laundry to whiten and bleach stains.
