How to Fix a File Permission Error While Saving a Word Document

Save

While saving a Microsoft Word document on a network, you may get the error message "There has been a network or file permission error." This error occurs because Word is not able to resolve the network path were the document needs to be saved. You can fix this error by using the absolute network path as specified in the Universal Naming Convention (UNC).

  • Click the "File" menu on the Word document that you want to save and then click "Save As."

  • Type the complete network path of the server where you want to save the file in the "File Name" box and then press "Enter." For example, "\server_name\share." Replace "server_name" with the name of the network server on which you want to save the Word file.

  • Type a name for the Word document that you want to save in the "File Name" box and then press "Enter."

  • Click the "Save As Type" drop-down box, choose "Word Document" and then press "Enter."
