How to Install Memory in a Dell Inspiron Laptop
A brand new Dell Inspiron laptop is usually fast and responsive. It opens applications quickly and speeds through webpages on the Internet. Over time, however, you might notice the laptop is not as fast as it once was. As you fill your hard drive with documents, photos and videos and install new programs, the computer slows down a bit. One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways of speeding up your Inspiron laptop is adding memory. Installing additional RAM in your Dell laptop is relatively inexpensive and only takes a few minutes.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips No. 2 screwdriver
- User guide or manual for your Inspiron laptop
- New memory module

1
Refer to the user guide or manual to determine the type of RAM your particular model Inspiron laptop uses. In most cases, the Inspiron laptop will use DDR or DDR2 type 200-pin SODIMM memory modules. Purchase a new memory module compatible with your Inspiron laptop.
-
2
Power off the Dell Inspiron laptop and disconnect the AC power adapter if connected. Unplug any other connected devices or peripherals from the laptop as well. Close the LCD display screen on the Inspiron.
-
-
3
Flip your laptop over so that it is facing bottom side up. Slide the locking latch to the left and slide the battery out of the case.
-
4
Loosen and remove the retaining screws that the secure memory slot cover. Depending on the model Inspiron you own, there are one or two screws you must remove to access the memory slot. The slot cover is next to the battery bay and has a small "M" label or a picture of a memory module next to it.
-
5
Use your fingers to push outward on the two clips that hold the memory module securely in the slot. Push on the clips until the SODIMM memory module pops up slightly. Pull the module out of the slot and avoid touching the contact edge as you set it aside.
-
6
Remove the new SODIMM memory module from its antistatic packaging. Be careful not to touch the metal edge of the module or you may damage it. Carefully align the notch on the metal edge of the memory module with the notch in the slot. Position the module at a 30- to 45-degree angle and push it firmly, but carefully, into the slot.
-
7
Push downward on the outer edge of the new memory module until it snaps into place in the slot. Replace the memory slot cover and reinsert the retaining screws. Use the Phillips screwdriver to tighten the screws.
-
8
Slide the battery back into its bay and ensure the latch locks. Flip the Inspiron laptop right side up. Plug in the AC power adapter and connect the other peripherals. Power on the laptop and allow it to boot into Windows.
