How to Turn Off Mac Remotes

Out of the box, every Mac computer comes with an Apple remote that allows you to launch the computer's "Front Row" feature and control media being played on the computer. Unfortunately, every Apple remote automatically works with every Mac computer, meaning that a single remote can control multiple Mac computers. While there is no way to turn off the Apple remote itself, you can disable the ability for the Mac computer to react to the remote in a few simple steps.

  • Click the "Apple" icon in the computer's menu bar, and select the "System Preferences" option from the drop-down menu.

  • Click the "Security" option beneath the "Personal" heading. Click the "General" tab in the "Security" window.

  • Click the "Lock" icon in the bottom left corner of the "Security" window. Type your admin password when prompted, and click the "OK" button to unlock the settings.

  • Place a check mark next to the "Disable Remote Control Infrared Receiver" option to turn off the Mac computer's remote control infrared receiver. Click the "Lock" icon to lock the settings in place.
