How to Test Google Chat

Google Chat is a function of Google's "Gmail" Internet email service. It operates just like any other instant messaging program in that it allows users to send and receive text-based messages over a Web connection. You can also install plug-ins on your machine to allow you to use it for voice and video chat. If you want to test your Google Chat video and voice settings to make sure everything is operating the way it should, you can do so from the main program window.

  • Double-click on the icon for your video and voice chat plug-in that you downloaded and installed to your computer. This will open the program's main window.

  • Look at the very bottom of the icon on screen that contains your "Friends" list. This list is the name of all screen names you communicate with on Google Chat. Click the icon at the bottom of this list labeled "Options."

  • Select "Chat Settings."

  • Choose the option labeled "Verify your Settings." The main Google Chat utility will analyze and verify your current hardware and network settings and will make sure that everything is configured properly to allow you to use the program.
