How to Reset an iPhone Keyboard

Save

The keyboard on the Apple iPhone is designed to predict the words and phrases you intend to type, even as you are typing them. Improve the text prediction system by using it more often, tapping words above the onscreen keyboard to verify them. However, if you make a spelling mistake on the word you verify, that word can become stored in the dictionary. Fortunately, there's a process in place for removing both default words and the entire stored dictionary.

Reset Dictionary

  • Turn the iPhone on and slide the unlock tab to the right. Enter your passcode if prompted and then press the "Home" button if the home screen is not automatically displayed.

  • Tap "Settings," "General" and then tap "Keyboard."

  • Tap "Reset" and then tap "Reset Keyboard Dictionary." Press the "Home" button to save your changes and return to the health screen.

Reset Default Words

  • Turn the iPhone on and slide the unlock tab to the right. Enter your passcode if prompted and then press the "Home" button if the home screen is not automatically displayed.

  • Slide the screen to the right and then tap the search bar at the top of the screen to display the onscreen keyboard.

  • Type a word that iPhone text prediction often misses. (Names and other proper nouns are often mistaken.) Type the entire word, and do not tap the space bar or period button.

  • Tap the complete word in the bar above the keyboard. Erase the word or name and then type it again. Tap the full word a second time to reassign the default word prediction.

Tips & Warnings

  • The iPhone uses a capacitive touchscreen, which means the keyboard does not require input or screen calibration. There is no option in the iPhone settings menu to calibrate the keys.
