Shore dives are a great way to avoid the cost and hassles of a boat. From the right spot you can get to your snorkeling destination with only a short swim.
Walk to the waterline with your snorkeling gear in hand.
Step2
Stop at a depth of approximately 3 feet with your defogged mask already on your head.
Step3
Float in the shallow, calm part of the water as you put on your fins.
Step4
Wait for a lull in the set ' if there are waves ' and then begin kicking out on your stomach.
Step5
Extend your hands in front of you, ready to hold your mask in case you must dive under a wave.
Step6
Check to see that your buddy is with you before swimming off to your snorkeling site.
Tips & Warnings
Spend a few extra minutes watching the water where you plan to enter. A little observation might go a long way to making your entry safe and easy.
Wear reef booties to protect your feet from sharp rocks, coral and sea urchins.
Rinse any sand out of your fins before putting them on.
If the bottom is soft sand with no rocks, shuffle your feet as you walk in the shallows to keep from stepping on stingrays.
Stay away from large surf and rocky shorelines with no beach. If the surf comes up, you may find yourself unable to come ashore.
Ask a local guide or lifeguard if you need to beware of any rip currents. If one develops, you might not be able to get back to your entry spot.
Snorkeling is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
