Microsoft Excel comes equipped with a "Convert" function that allows users to specify any quantity and have it automatically converted to a different unit of measure. The spreadsheet can easily be configured to automatically convert the values in one column that are expressed in feet into the equivalent amount of inches in another column. However, the program does not support expressions of answers in feet and inches by default. A simple add-in fixes that problem in seconds.

Step 1

Download the InchCalc add-in file to your hard drive.

Step 2

Open Microsoft Excel and load the add-in file. In Excel 2000 and 2003, click "Tools," then "Add-Ins" and click on "Browse." In 2007, click the Office symbol and click "Excel Options," then the "Add-Ins" heading. Click the "Go" button with "Manage Excel Add-Ins" selected, then click "Browse."

Step 3

Select the location where the add-in file was downloaded and click "Open."

Step 4

Use the new function to convert inches to feet and inches. Put any number into cell A1 and type "=i2s(A1)" without the quotation marks in cell B1. For example, a value of 81 inches (entered 81) in cell A1 will be shown as 6 feet 9 inches (displayed as 6' - 9") in cell B1.

Step 5

Use the new function to convert feet and inches to inches. Put any number into cell A2 and type "=s2i(A2)" without the quotation marks in cell B2. For example, a value of 6 feet 11 inches (entered as 6'-11") in cell A2 will be shown as 83 inches (displayed as 83) in cell B2.
