How to Study Bio-Psychology Effectively


Bio-psychology can be a challenging course for some students, particularly those who do not have a strong background in hard sciences. Bio-psychology is the study of the ways in which the nervous system and the brain control people's behaviors, and there is a fairly recent body of knowledge and grouping of studies with which students need to familiarize themselves. When taking a course in bio-psychology, it is important to have effective study habits to retain the volume of information and facts.

  • Give yourself plenty of time to study bio-psychology. Read your course materials as they are assigned and study them regularly. Remember that bio-psychology is as much about understanding the material as it is about the memorization.

  • Highlight key passages and facts in your bio-psychology textbook so when it is time to study for the test you will have a better idea of what to focus on when picking up the textbook. Key passages will be made clear by what your professor focuses on during class.

  • Take diligent notes during class. Your bio-psychology professor will explain concepts from your textbook that are more difficult to understand and add information to help you grasp key concepts. Having detailed notes on the material will allow you to study more effectively.

  • Start studying your lecture notes, textbook and supporting bio-psychology materials two weeks before an exam in 10-minute intervals. Increase your study time each day until you are studying 1 to 2 hours at a time with 10- to 20-minute breaks.

  • Keep abreast of recent research. If you plan to study bio-psychology beyond the introductory course, read about recent studies, cases and research in psychological and scientific journals to gain insight into the field and make studying less challenging.
