How to Add a Watermark in IrfanView

IrfanView, a free image viewing program, lets you quickly edit digital pictures. If you have pictures that you want to distribute, you might consider adding a watermark before uploading them to the Internet. This helps prevent other people from taking credit for photos to which you hold a copyright. IrfanView does not have a menu option to add a watermark, but you can add one through a text box.

  • Open the picture to which you want to add a watermark in IrfanView.

  • Click on the picture in the place where you want to place the watermark. Drag the rectangle that appears to the approximate size of the watermark, and then release the mouse button.

  • Click the "Edit" menu, and select "Insert Text Into Selection" to bring up a dialog box.

  • Enter the text you want, such as your copyright information. Choose the font size, color and font type for your watermark. You should use font colors that contrast with the portion of the image where you chose to place the watermark.

  • Click "OK" when you are done entering the text and IrfanView will add the watermark to your picture.
