How to Turn Off & Unlock the Key Ring on Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a free Linux desktop operating system. It's entirely community built and comes with both community and professional assistance. The Ubuntu Key Ring is a password program that automatically remembers and encrypts all the passwords ever typed into your computer, including user passwords, online passwords and email passwords. Unlocking and turning off the Key Ring permanently is very simple so long as you know where to look.

Unlock Key Ring

  • Click on the "Ubuntu Main Menu" button and double-click on applications. Scroll down to "Accessories" and double-click on it to open. Scroll down to "Passwords and Encryption Keys" and double-click on it to access Key Ring options.

  • Right-click on the user password entry from the large list of passwords and encryption keys, and select the "Change Password" option from the pop-up menu.

  • Type in the old password in the "Old Password" field and leave the "New Password" field blank. Click the "Create" button; the warning message "Store passwords unencrypted?" will pop up. Click the "Use Unsafe Storage" button to save the changes.

Turn Off Key Ring

  • Open the "Home" folder by clicking on "Places" and selecting "Home" from the list.

  • Press the "Ctrl" button and "H" button on the keyboard simultaneously to reveal hidden folders and files.

  • Locate and double-click on the folder entitled ".gnome2." Scroll down until you find the "keyrings" folder and double-click on it to open it.

  • Delete all the files in the "keyrings" folder by clicking on them to highlight and pressing the "Delete" key.

  • Restart the computer. Click on the "Use Unsafe Storage" button when the "Store passwords unencrypted?" warning pops up during start-up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Turning off Key Ring means all your passwords will be stored unencrypted; if your computer were to become compromised, they could easily find all your passwords.
