How to Copy a Palm Desktop to Another Computer

Save

For data protection, a user typically keeps two copies of each Palm database containing his personal information (e.g., appointments and business contacts): one on a personal computer, and another on the Palm handheld device. The handheld device includes built-in software to modify and manage those databases. Palm Desktop is the PC equivalent of that software: it allows the user to modify the database versions stored on the computer. Sometimes, there is a need for having another computer start to act as the handheld's backup. You can transfer all the personal data associated with your Palm Desktop to another computer.

Things You'll Need

  • Backup storage device (e.g., external hard disk or Flash drive)
  • Palm Desktop installation CD (included with the Palm device)
  • Connect the backup device to the computer that currently has Palm Desktop; turn off the computer first if necessary (USB devices do not require that.)

  • Turn on the computer if needed. Log in to it.

  • Click on "Start," then on "My computer." Double-click on the backup storage device. Windows will display its contents.

  • Click on "Tools" on the Palm Desktop, then select "Options." Make a note of the path listed as "Data directory" under the "General" tab.

  • Click on "Start," then on "My computer." Double-click on the "C:" drive. Navigate to the data directory obtained in Step four, then press "Alt-Up." Right-click on the icon for the folder containing the data directory and select "Copy."

  • Click on the window opened in Step three with the contents of the backup device, then press "Control-V." At that time, the backup device will contain the PC's copy of all the Palm databases.

  • Disconnect the backup device from the computer. Connect it to the computer where you want to copy Palm Desktop.

  • Log in to the computer where you want to copy Palm Desktop.

  • Insert the Palm Desktop installation CD, the follow the installer's prompts until Palm Desktop is installed on the computer.

  • Click on "Start," then on "My computer." Double-click on the backup storage device. Windows will display its contents.

  • Launch Palm Desktop. Click on "Tools," then select "Options." Make a note of the path listed as "Data directory" under the "General" tab.

  • Click on "Start," then on "My computer." Double-click on the "C:" drive. Navigate to the data directory obtained in Step 11, then press "Alt-Up."

  • Click on the window displaying the contents of the backup device (opened in Step 10.) Right-click on the folder containing the files copied from the first computer, then select "Copy." Click on the window displaying the data directory on the computer you are on, then press "Control-V." Windows will copy all databases--and with them the complete user data from the original computer--to the Palm Desktop you just installed.
