How to Put a Drain Stop in a Sink
Even though the stopper in your sink's drain looks simple from the top of the sink, when you look underneath you realize there is more to the mechanism than the lift rod and the stopper itself. Assembling the different parts of the sink stopper mechanism looks confusing to anyone who has not performed the task before, but even novices can put the mechanism together in less than half an hour once they understand how the different parts fit together. 1
Drop the stopper in the sink opening, making sure the hole in the end of the stopper faces the hole in the side of the drainpipe. Insert the shorter end of the pivot rod into the opening in the side of the drainpipe, pushing the ball on the rod into the opening as well.
-
2
Slide the plastic gasket piece and the plastic retaining nut over the other end of the pivot rod. Thread the retaining nut onto the opening in the drainpipe, turning the nut clockwise until it is hand-tight.
-
3
Place a spring clip over the other end of the clevis strap, lining the holes in the spring clip up with a hole in the clevis strap. Insert the end of the pivot rod through the spring clip and clevis strap.

4
Thread the lift rod through the opening in the top of the faucet, allowing the rod's handle to rest on the top of the faucet. Insert the end of the lift rod through the holes in the "C" shape of the clevis strap, then use a screwdriver to tighten the retaining screw to hold the clevis strap onto the lift rod.
