How to Outline Text in GIMP

GIMP is a freeware photo editing and graphics program that anyone can use. Many individuals and small businesses use GIMP to create things like signs or brochures. One way to make your text as visually interesting as your images is to apply a decorative outline to the text. This is easy to do in GIMP.

  • Open GIMP. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." Browse to a project you want to add text to.

  • Select the "Test" tool from the toolbar. In the options, choose the font style and size you want. Then go to the canvas and type in your text.

  • Go back to the "Text" options and click on "Path from Text." Click on the "Path" tab in the layers panel, right-click on the path and choose "Path to Selection."

  • Change the "Foreground" color in the toolbar to what you want for the outline. Select "Stroke Selection." In the dialog, choose the line width you want and click "Stroke." Save your work.
