How to Convert FLV to MP4 With VLC

Save

Flash Videos, or FLVs, are one of the most common video formats on the Internet. Most streaming video sites encode their media as FLVs. MP4s, on the other hand, are popular on cell phones and portable media devices. VLC Media Player is a free, cross-platform open-source video player and transcoder that supports dozens of file formats, including FLV and MP4. Use VLC Player to convert downloaded FLV files to the MP4 format.

  • Launch VLC. Click the "Media" menu at the top of the screen and select "Convert/Save" to enter the "Open Media" window.

  • Click the "File" tab. Click the "Add..." button. Locate the FLV on your hard drive using the pop-up search screen and click "Open."

  • Check the "Show More Options" box in the lower-left corner. Click the "Convert/Save" button to enter the "Form" window.

  • Click the "Encapsulation" tab and select the "MP4/MOV" option.

  • Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the window to enter a pop-up save screen. Name your file, including an ".mp4" file extension at the end. Choose a location on your computer for the converted file and click "Save" to convert the FLV to MP4.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're converting the file for a portable media device, consult the user manual for any specifically supported audio and video compression types.
  • A conversion may take up to several hours, depending on the size of the input file and your computer's processing speed.
