How to Change the Color on a Pie Chart in PowerPoint

When drawn on real paper, pie charts may be hard to edit colorwise without using liquid paper replacement or darker colors. Luckily, changing a pie chart color in Microsoft PowerPoint requires no messy repainting. You can use one of PowerPoint's one-click color changes or perfect your pie piece-by-piece to get the desired color.

  • Open "Microsoft PowerPoint." Click the "File" tab, and select the "Open" option. Navigate to the presentation with the pie chart to change colors, and double-click the file name. When the slideshow opens, press the "Page Down" key to get to the slide with the pie chart.

  • Click once on the pie chart to open the green "Chart Tools" tab at the top of the work area, along with its chart toolbar. Click one of the "Chart Styles" options on the ribbon to instantly change all of the pie piece colors at once. Be sure to use the scroll bar for that section, as there are more one-click colors than show on the ribbon.

  • Change the pie piece colors individually by double-clicking that single slice of the pie. The "Format Data Point" window opens. Click the "Fill" option on the left side. Click the "Solid Fill" radio button.

  • Click the "Color" button under the words "Fill Color." Click a small colored box to choose the color for that pie piece. Click the "Close" button. Note that if your pie chart has a legend, PowerPoint automatically updates the color for you.

  • Repeat the "Format Data Point" process to change pie pieces individually as desired.
