Using a Ryobi miter saw, or any other miter saw for that matter, reduces the time it takes to do a job to only a fraction of what it was when carpenters and woodworkers used miter boxes and hand-held back saws. Today, an artisan can cut the outside corner of a piece of crown molding in a matter of seconds where it once took as much as five to 10 minutes to lay it out and cut it by hand.
Things You'll Need
- Scrap lumber
Unplug the saw and lift the saw handle to its full height. Loosen the miter lock handle by rotating it counterclockwise 1/2-turn. Press down on the miter lock plate. Rotate the control arm to the left or to the right until the desired angle on the miter scale is aligned with the pointer on the miter lock handle. Release the miter lock plate and tighten the miter lock handle by rotating it clockwise.
Loosen the bevel lock, located at the back of the saw, by turning it counterclockwise. Move the saw arm to the left until the pointer aligns with the desired angle on the bevel gauge, which is located at the back of the saw. Tighten the bevel lock clockwise.
Mark a cut line on a piece of scrap lumber using a straight edge and a pencil. Place the lumber on the miter saw table with the flat side down and the edge against the miter saw fence. Lower the blade to the lumber, prior to turning the saw on, by pulling down on the saw handle. Align the blade with the cut line on the lumber.
Plug in the saw. Hold the lumber in place with one hand while operating the saw handle with your other hand. Pull the trigger in the saw handle to start the blade and let it to reach maximum speed. Lower the blade and contact the lumber gently. Lift the arm up slightly to inspect the. Make sure the blade is cutting the lumber at the desired location.
Bring the blade down to the lumber and slowly move the blade through it until the lumber is cut all the way through.
Release the trigger and allow the blade to come to a complete stop before raising the blade from the lumber.
Tips & Warnings
- The bevel of the saw should only be set to an angle other than zero degrees only if a bevel or compound cut is desired.
- Place warped wood on the saw table with the concave side up. Positioning the wood the other way could possibly bind the blade and cause saw damage and possibly personal injury.
- Read and follow the directions that come with your power tool.
- Always wear safety glasses.
