  1. Step 1

    Make sure that your equipment - mask, fins, snorkel, etc. - fits properly and is in good working order.

  2. Step 2

    Practice using your equipment in a pool or other environment free of waves, current and other hazards, and in shallow water where you can stand if necessary.

  3. Step 3

    Choose a good snorkeling partner ' your "buddy" ' who is more experienced and can instruct you.

  4. Step 4

    Know your limitations as a swimmer and only snorkel where you feel comfortable.

    Take your time to double-check your equipment and survey the area.
