Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Fencing Gear

Step1
Extend the saber directly up and forward, into line with the opponent's chest, hand in 2nd position.
Step2
Step directly forward with the leading foot along the line of direction approximately one and 1/2 shoe lengths.
Step3
Set the foot down heel first, toes directed at the adversary.
Step4
Bend both knees and open them away from each other, rear knee positioned perpendicular to the rear toe and front knee over the instep of the right foot.
Step5
Draw the sword arm back slightly.
Step6
Lower the hand just below the level of the chest and turn it to 2nd in 3rd position.
Step7
Position the elbow, forearm, hand and weapon to the right (right-handed fencers) of the flank, positioning the saber so that its point is level with the adversary's eyes.
Step8
Curl the unarmed hand into a fist and place it on the rear hip, thumb above, knuckles below.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pay strict attention to the manner in which the guard is held since the valid target in saber fencing, unlike that for foil, extends upward from the hips and includes the sword arm and hand.
  • Fencing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
