How to Make Three-Column Footnotes in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a popular word processing program for creating documents by combining text, graphics and backgrounds. Many Word features are fully or partially automated, allowing users to quickly adjust a document's format and design. You can use Word's "footer" feature to insert materials at the bottom of each page of your document. You can create footers in a variety of formats, including three-column footers, using options built into your Word program.

  • Open the Word document in which you want to add a footer. Click the "Insert" tab near the top of the screen to open the ribbon commands for inserting a footer.

  • Click the down-arrow by the "Footer" command in the "Header & Footer" section of the ribbon to display a pull-down menu of options.

  • Click "Blank (Three Columns)" to insert a three-column footer at the bottom of each page of your Word document.

  • Type text in each column of the footer. The text will be repeated in the footer on each page of your document.
