How to Change the Keyboard Layout on a Mac

The layout of the keys on a keyboard varies depending on the style of the keyboard and the language for which it was designed. When you connect a keyboard to a Mac computer, it may automatically detect the layout and switch to that layout. If it does not, you can run the Keyboard Setup Assistant to determine the layout and change to it.

  • Connect the keyboard to the Mac.

  • Click the "Apple" menu and scroll down to "System Preferences." Open the "Keyboard" preference window.

  • Click the "Change Keyboard Type" button.

  • Press the keys indicated on the screen to identify the keyboard. Press the "Done" button to confirm the layout and start using the keyboard.
